Generic Tobramycin And Dexamethasone

Common use
Tobramycin and dexamethasone is a combination ophthalmic medication used to treat eye infections with associated inflammation. Tobramycin is an antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria, while dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces swelling, redness, and irritation. This dual-action formula is commonly prescribed for bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, or post-operative eye care. It helps control infection while minimizing inflammation and discomfort.
Dosage and direction
Typically, 1 to 2 drops are applied into the affected eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours, depending on the severity of the condition. In more severe cases, dosing may be increased initially and then gradually reduced. Shake the bottle well before use if it's a suspension. Follow your doctor’s instructions closely, and do not stop treatment early even if symptoms improve.
Precautions
Before using this medication, inform your doctor if you have a history of glaucoma, herpes simplex eye infections, or cataract surgery. Prolonged use may increase the risk of eye pressure, secondary infections, or delayed healing. Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment unless your doctor approves. Use with caution in patients with known steroid-responsive conditions.
Contraindications
Do not use this medication in viral or fungal eye infections, or if you are allergic to tobramycin, dexamethasone, or any of the formulation's components. It is contraindicated in ocular tuberculosis, untreated purulent infections, and epithelial herpes simplex keratitis. Use in children under 2 years of age is generally not recommended unless specifically prescribed. Always follow medical guidance for safe use.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include temporary eye burning, stinging, itching, or blurred vision after application. Long-term use may lead to increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma, cataracts, or secondary infections. Rare but serious reactions include eye pain, vision changes, or allergic responses. Contact your doctor if any unusual or severe symptoms occur.
Drug interaction
While the risk of systemic drug interaction is low due to the topical route, avoid combining with other eye medications without medical advice. If using multiple ophthalmic products, wait at least 5–10 minutes between each application. Inform your doctor about any other eye drops, antibiotics, or corticosteroids you are using. Do not use with ocular NSAIDs unless prescribed.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one—do not double the dose. Resume your normal schedule. Consistency is important to effectively manage the infection and inflammation.
Overdose
Accidental overdose from eye drops is rare but may result in excessive eye irritation, redness, or tearing. Ingestion of the product, especially by children, should be treated as a medical emergency. Rinse the eye with clean water if too much is applied. Seek medical help if symptoms worsen.
Storage
Store the medication at room temperature (15°C to 25°C / 59°F to 77°F), away from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed and avoid contamination of the dropper tip. Keep out of reach of children and discard after expiration.
